How to Ask Permission to Stay in Touch

May 30, 2025

Ever left a great appointment, never to hear from that client again?

You nailed the experience. You were warm, professional, efficient, even impressive. You thought you really hit it off, but then… radio silence.

Most notaries chalk it up to the nature of the business. “It’s transactional,” they say. “People only need a notary once in a while.”

Maybe.

But if you're building a business, not just chasing the next appointment, you can’t afford to be forgettable.

Here’s the easiest, most overlooked step in Masterfully Delivering Your Services (Step 2 in the Top of Mind Method):

Ask permission to stay in touch.

That’s it. One simple question at the end of the appointment:

“I’d love to stay in touch. Do you mind if I sent you a thank you card and the occasional email?”

No one says no. Why would they? You just solved their problem. You showed up like a pro.

They like you.

They trust you.

The secret is, once you have permission, you must follow through.

A card.

A check-in text.

A quick email a few weeks later.

A holiday hello. Something that keeps you top of mind, without being annoying.

If they needed a notary once, they'll probably need one again. Or they’ll know someone who does.

If you’ve got other services like apostilles, fingerprinting, estate planning presentations, you owe it to them to make sure they know that. YOU care more than any other notary will!

Staying in touch is your responsibility. Not theirs.

And if you don’t, you’re not just leaving money on the table, you’re leaving your clients out in the cold the next time they need someone they can count on.

It’s modern marketing at its simplest and most powerful.

THIS is what a relationship-based business does.

And next week, I’ll show you how to actually stay in touch without being salesy, spammy, or exhausting.

For now, end every appointment with this ask.

Then keep your word.

Stay in touch.
